Prince Ukpong Akpabio II Shares in Moments of Joy and Sorrow with Constituents

Earlier today, the member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Prince Ukpong Akpabio II, once again demonstrated his commitment to community, solidarity, and leadership by joining his constituents in two significant ceremonies that reflected both the beauty of life’s joyful milestones and the solemnity of farewells.

Celebrating Love and New Beginnings

Prince Akpabio II was among dignitaries and well-wishers who gathered at Saint Mary Catholic Parish, Okon, Essien Udim Local Government Area to witness the holy matrimony of Miss Ruth Asuquo Thompson and Mr. Leo David Johnny. The colorful event drew family members, friends, and community leaders who came together to celebrate the couple’s decision to begin a lifelong journey in love and unity.

In his remarks during the service, the lawmaker congratulated the newlyweds and prayed God’s abundant blessings upon their marriage. He reminded them that a successful union is built on patience, trust, understanding, and above all, the grace of God.

Speaking from personal experience, Prince Akpabio II used his own marriage of over 18 years as an example, emphasizing that while challenges may come, faith and mutual respect help couples weather the storm. He advised Ruth and Leo to remain steadfast in love, avoid unnecessary distractions, and always prioritize peace within their home. His message resonated deeply with the congregation, leaving the couple inspired and encouraged.

Paying Last Respects to a Woman of Virtue

Later in the day, Prince Akpabio II joined hundreds of mourners at the funeral mass of Late Warden Regina Dennis Asanga, who passed away at the age of 82. The solemn ceremony was held at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Ikot Obio Ata, Nkwot 1, Ikono Local Government Area, and was attended by dignitaries, religious leaders, friends, and various socio-cultural organizations.

The late matriarch, who was the mother of Alphonsus Dennis Asanga—a close friend of Prince Akpabio II—was celebrated as a woman of virtue, discipline, and unwavering faith. She was remembered for her commitment to family, service to her community, and her dedication to raising children who continue to uphold her values.

In his condolence message, Prince Akpabio II described her as a mother to many, whose life of sacrifice, compassion, and love left behind an enduring legacy. He encouraged the family to take solace in the impactful life she lived and the generations she nurtured. He further prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and God’s strength for the family to bear the irreparable loss.

The Spirit of True Leadership

By being present at both a wedding and a funeral on the same day, Prince Akpabio II highlighted what he called the “true spirit of leadership and community”. According to him, sharing in both the moments of joy and sorrow of constituents reflects genuine representation and empathy.

“Leadership is not just about laws and policies. It is about humanity, standing with the people in their happiest celebrations and in their deepest pains,” he said.

His words and actions underscored the role of public leaders as not only policymakers but also companions in the everyday journeys of the people they serve.

A Symbol of Solidarity and Service

Both events showcased Prince Akpabio II’s unwavering commitment to fostering community bonds. At the wedding, he was a symbol of encouragement for young couples starting their marital lives. At the funeral, he was a pillar of comfort to a grieving family and community.

Through these acts of presence and solidarity, the lawmaker continues to strengthen his relationship with the people of Essien Udim and beyond, showing that true leadership lies in humility, compassion, and service to humanity.
