Head Of Civil Service Lauds Gov. Umo Eno for Prioritizing Workers’ Welfare

During a media parley announcing the State’s 2025 Public Service Week Celebration, State Head of Civil Service (HOCS) Elder Effiong Essien revealed this to the media on Monday. The hiring, according to the head of civil service, follows the completion of the verification process for Akwa Ibom State public employees, which was mandated by Governor Umo Eno last year.

Additionally, Essien revealed that the verification exercise, which was made available to all 55,000 (fifty-five thousand) public servants on the payroll, was completed with fewer than 53,000 workers showing up. As a result, 2,208 employees were removed from the system for not showing up, “creating avenue for vacancies in the public sector in Akwa Ibom State.”

I’d also like to happily report that, as a result of that verification process, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno has authorized the hiring of three thousand people for the Akwa Ibom State public service: one thousand for the state’s main service, one thousand for medical personnel, and one thousand for teaching. This comes right after the celebration of Public Service Week.

Additionally, during the celebration of 2025 Public Service Week, His Excellency has authorized the distribution of 2025 promotions to state public employees. Elder Effiong Essien revealed that he has also authorized and issued N2.5 billion to erase the backlog of the 7.5% contributory pension plan, which was halted in 2013.

He also took advantage of the occasion to praise Pastor Umo Eno, whom he referred to as a “worker-friendly governor,” for consistently putting the welfare of his employees first. He cited the N80,000 new minimum, timely salary payments, the donation of 150 two-bedroom apartments at Grace Estate to lower-level civil servants, and the gift of brand-new SUVs to the state’s permanent secretaries as examples of his love for the state’s workforce.

In addition, he commended the governor’s efforts to significantly decrease the N90 billion pension and gratuity backlog, stating that his government has so far lowered the debt to roughly N30 billion.

Speaking in detail about the events planned for 2025 Public Service Week, which has as its theme “Leveraging Technology for a Smart and Agile Public Service,” Elder Essien revealed that the event will formally begin this Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with a public lecture led by Commissioner for Science and Digital Economy Dr. Frank Ekpenyong at the Civil Service Auditorium.

According to him, a roadwalk is scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 a.m., with the departure point being Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat Field, and a novelty football match between the Mainstream Civil Service and Local Government Service Staff is scheduled for Friday at 4:00 p.m.

The Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, is anticipated to be a special guest at the Thanksgiving service held at the International Worship Center on Sunday, June 29, 2025, which will mark the culmination of the Public Service Week celebration.
